Cleansing is the foundation to great skin, and the double cleanse is key to ensuring thorough and effective cleansing.
Double Cleansing has become increasingly popular across the beauty industry over the last year. It is a technique that became popular in Japan and South Korea before catching on in Europe and North America.
You might just be thinking, “isn’t that just double the amount of work?” But it will do you a whole world of benefit.
What is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing is washing your face twice with two different cleansers. Usually, one oil-based cleanser first and one foaming cleanser to follow.
A double cleanse allows you to remove the first layer of dirt, pollution and makeup, as well as the second cleanse of the deeper layers of pore congestion.
Oil based formulas are necessary because they can easily dissolve makeup and certain dirt and debris in a way that water just can’t. Whereas, water based cleansers remove impurities like sweat and dirt, and can do so more effectively once the initial dirt is removed.
The double effect will ensure anything that may clog your pores are not left on overnight.
Do I need to Double Cleanse?
Double Cleansing can be beneficial for a range of people and their skin types.
If you have oily skin, oil cleansing is SUPER essential. Balancing your natural sebum production is key. Oil cleansing ensures the skin is kept moisturised so the skin does not naturally overproduce its own oils.
People who have acne-prone skin may want to gently double cleanse to help remove the bacteria that can lead to breakouts.
Dry Skin/Sensitive skin
Look for gentle cleansers. A neutral pH level can help ensure skin isn’t dried out further, ingredients such as jojoba oil and shea butter can help with hydration.
The technique can also be useful for people who wear heavy makeup.
How often should I double cleanse?
Double cleansing should ALWAYS be done at night to remove any dirt and build up from the day.
Double cleansing can also be done in the morning to ensure you skin maintains its clean streak - after-all, pillowases that haven't been washed in 1 week can have 17,422 times more bacteria than a toilet seat! Yikes!
